    Job Description

    THE CITY

    Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917 and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops, and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 700+ employees with an overall operating budget of over $368 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services including Fire, Police, Housing and Human Services, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services (PRCS), and Transportation.

    THE POSITION

    FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC - LATERAL

    THE CULVER CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT IS NOW OFFERING A

    $5,000 BONUS INCENTIVE TO BE AWARDED UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A ONE-YEAR PROBATIONARY PERIOD PLUS SIX (6) MONTHS

    General Duties:
    This position responds to fires participating in control tactics, rescues persons endangered by fires or other hazards, provides emergency medical services as an EMT-1 or as a Paramedic, may perform fire prevention tasks, or other related duties.

    Minimum Requirements:
    Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: Graduation from high school or equivalent and experience in a work environment involving equipment usage, public contact, and physical activity. Candidates are required to meet the standards set forth in the Fire Department's Tattoo Policy (Rules and Regulations 205.28).     Must have been employed as a Firefighter/Paramedic with another agency providing structural fire protection and emergency paramedic services for a minimum of twelve (12) months after successfully completing the probationary period, prior to the application closing date.

    Appointment: Candidates offered employment will be appointed to a probationary Firefighter/Paramedic position. They will spend up to four weeks at the Drill Tower learning Culver City Fire Department operations. Probation is twelve (12) months during which time the candidate will be evaluated on Engine, Truck, and Paramedic procedures.

    Medical/Psychological Screen: Candidates must meet psychological medical standards. Please contact the Culver City Human Resources Department for additional details of vision and hearing requirements.

    License and Certificates:
    A copy of each of the following items must be attached to the application at the time of submission. Applications without the required attachments will not be considered.
    • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver license is required at time of appointment (hire)
    • Firefighter 1 Certificate
    • Copy of State of California Paramedic License
    • Must have been employed as a Firefighter/Paramedic with an agency providing structural fire protection and emergency paramedic services for a minimum of 12 months prior to the application closing date
    • LA County paramedic accreditation must be obtained by date of hire
    • Candidates with National Registry or other valid paramedic certifications may apply

    A starting salary is commensurate with years of experience performing full-time paid experience in an all-risk fire agency.

    Salary $79,905.74 -$116,033.25 annual base salary
    One-time $5,000 Hiring Bonus will be given upon completion of a one-year probationary period plus six (6) months 23.25% paramedic bonus above a respective Firefighter 56-hour base salary during such assignment will be given for possession of a valid State of California paramedic license and LA County Department of health services paramedic license *Based on your experience as a Firefighter/ Paramedic Lateral with your agency, you may be hired at a higher step than the bottom of the salary range. * Twelve percent (12%) compensation increase will be given for possession of an EMT Certificate Five and a half percent (5.5%) compensation increase will be given for possession of Firefighter I Certificate Bilingual incentive of five percent (5%), if eligible Education Incentive of 2% for Associate's Degree (AA), 4% for Bachelor's Degree (BA), and 6% for Master's Degree (MA) Longevity Pay of $5,000/year for 10 years of service, $8,000/year for 15 years of service, $11,000/year for 20 years of service, and $14,000/year for 25 years of service 7.5% base salary increase over the term of the current 2022-2025 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) CalPERS retirement benefits Please click on the "Benefits" tab to view additional information regarding compensation, benefits, and assignments

    EXAMINATION PROCEDURES

    Examination Components:

    • Appraisal Interview (weighted at 100%): To evaluate the candidate's preparation, situational and scenario judgements, presentation, knowledge, communication skills, paramedic skills, and personal qualities.
      • Tentatively Scheduled for the week of June 2, 2025, and/or June 9, 2025.
