    Under close supervision, the Engineering Technician performs a variety of technical drafting, office and field engineering work.

    The current vacancy is in the Public Works Agency's Park, Fleet and Facilities & Refuse division. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current and/or additional vacancies throughout the City.

    Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

    Provides administrative and technical support within the Public Works Department. Reviews engineering plans and specifications, maps, property descriptions, and related documents for compliance with City codes, laws, regulations, and ordinances. Responds to inquiries and complaints from other departments, agencies, contractors, consultants, City staff, and the public. Exercises judgment when responding to complaints from the public and resolves conflicts between owners, contractors, developers, utility companies, and others. Performs field observations, on-site inspections, surveys, collects field and plan data, and locates and measures boundary lines, rights of ways, and land grades. Maintains engineering record keeping and filing systems. Prepares or assists in the preparation of and/or interprets specifications, plans, maps, drawings, calculation of grades, estimates and reports related to the operation of a variety of engineering projects. Performs basic design and drafting duties in relation to streets, utilities, and other projects. Prepares and updates exhibits, maps, complex drawings from engineering sketches, survey field notes, and other data for the design of construction of a variety of public works projects. Performs field, office, and computer-aided studies and prepares periodic and special reports based on findings from research, studies, and surveys; and makes recommendations on findings. Compiles material and quantity lists from engineering plans. Prepares a variety of illustrations, certificates, visual aides for various meetings and presentations. Performs basic engineering and administrative duties related to the planning, design and construction infrastructure. Prepares progress payments for contractors, coordinates inspections with other departments, and makes recommendations for changes as appropriate. Assists Project Managers in overseeing construction projects and day-to-day construction activities.
    Performs other functions as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by college level coursework in engineering, mathematics, or a related field, plus two (2) years of engineering field or office work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which results in the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    Knowledge of : Basic principles and practices related to engineering operations and design, the construction and maintenance of public works traffic systems and facilities, CAD software, drafting and surveying techniques, maps, record keeping, and technical engineering mathematics.

    Skill in : the use of computers and standard software applications including Microsoft computer software applications and computer-aided design (CAD) software; utilize computer databases to maintain and update records and files; maintain accurate records and files.

    Ability to : Complete moderately complex engineering and mathematic calculations with speed and accuracy; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; work independently in the absence of supervision; create CAD drawings, exhibits and plans; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's license.

    Oral Interview Examination (Weight of 100%) : ( Tentatively Scheduled for January 27, 2026 ) will evaluate the candidates' experience, training, education and abilities in relation to those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job. Candidates need a minimum passing score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

    The Human Resources Department may waive an examination component. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score in all examination components administered in order to be placed on the eligible list. Examinations may be scheduled in a different order in which they appear above.
