    Chronic Disease Prevention Specialist I

    $4,756 - $6,495 per Month

    SUMMARY OF POSITION

    The County of Monterey Health Department’s Public Health Bureau has an opening for a full-time Chronic Disease Prevention Specialist I (CDPS I) in the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program. The CDPS I is responsible for determining program eligibility, completing and obtaining nutrition/food history, health and medical information from WIC applicants/participants. The CDPS I will maintain accurate WIC participant records, documenting certification information and nutrition education contacts, familiarizing potential and new participants with the WIC program guidelines, promoting breastfeeding to prenatal participants and making referrals to local breastfeeding support programs and resources.

    The WIC Program is a nutrition education and supplemental food program that helps pregnant, postpartum women, and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and children under the age of five who are at nutritional risk. The program’s mission is to improve health during critical times of growth and development.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary, as they arise.

    Examples of Duties

    • Provide technical assistance to individuals and community groups and agencies.
    • Assist in developing target groups, educational/training materials, setting up, and taking down training equipment, distributing training materials; maintaining, inventorying, and replenishing training materials as needed.
    • Perform assigned administrative functions in support of health care program administration.
    • May conduct training sessions in the presence of higher level Specialist.
    • May assist in the development, coordination and follow-up of national and state health promotion activities, and informational campaigns.
    • Review materials and publications to stay abreast of issues related to chronic disease prevention or health promotion and service programs.

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Some Knowledge of:
    • Principles and techniques used in health care and health promotion programs.
    • Principles and techniques used in developing training materials.


    Skill and Ability to:
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contracted through the course of work including individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural groups.
    • Operate audio visual equipment.
    • Work under limited supervision in field settings.
    • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing; write clear and concise reports; speak effectively before groups.


    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English and Spanish


    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    • Completion of coursework leading to a bachelors degree in public/ community health education, education, behavioral or life science, sociology, biology or psychology.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
