Position DescriptionThe City of Tacoma's, Public Works Department, Transportation Division, is recruiting a full-time position for a Safe Routes to School Coordinator.
We are seeking an outgoing, highly motivated, collaborative team member that will be responsible for performing a variety of duties with a primary focus on continuing the work begun through the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Implementation Plan to support and encourage students and families to safely walk, bike, and skateboard to school through fun and meaningful engagement activities and programming. The position will work with Tacoma School District staff, City staff, parents, and community members, including youth, to create safe active transportation environments at and around schools. Additional tasks will include seeking funding opportunities, creating new policy for school development, piloting strategies to reach underserved communities, providing programmatic support for under-resourced schools, and assisting with neighborhood traffic concerns.
Our Ideal Candidate will have experience working with school age youth, in school transportation, community planning, public engagement, traffic safety engineering, neighborhood planning, or related fields. The candidate will have a broad understanding of the areas mentioned above, as well as working knowledge of relevant City codes and policies, and other state and federal laws that inform our daily work.
Essential Duties:- Plans, executes, attends, and leads outreach events and community engagement; develops and makes presentations to community groups, businesses and stakeholders; creates outreach materials.
- Conducts transportation policy, program, and planning work; analyzes data from a variety of sources including surveys, crash data, etc. to provide recommendations and identify areas of improvement.
- Collaborates and coordinates with a variety of stakeholders to promote and implement updates to established transportation programs, projects and initiatives to ensure projects, programs and initiatives are consistent with and work towards achieving City goals and policies; responds to inquiries and concerns about transportation programs, projects and initiatives.
- Supports or coordinates grant writing; assists with grant application submittals; administers grants including managing related contracts.
- As assigned, may take on a lead role on special projects or programs under the guidance of more senior staff members.
Qualifications Minimum Education* Bachelor's degree in planning, public administration, engineering or directly related field
Minimum Experience 2 years of experience in planning, program management, or engineering
*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability and willingness to travel throughout Tacoma and partner jurisdictions in Pierce County; at times, with supplies and equipment for outreach and events. An ORCA transit pass will be provided. City fleet vehicles will be available for use only with a valid Washington State Driver’s License.

- Proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including ArcGIS, Microsoft Office products, and Internet applications
- Experience using Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop is desired
