    Essential Job Functions

    Supervises food services managers and other food service personnel in all of the Sheriff's facilities.

    Inspects food service operations, including food preparation, serving, storage, safety practices, sanitation, and administrative procedures.

    Develops new or improved techniques in institutional feeding.

    Determines items and quantities of food necessary to maintain proper and economical rations at each institution.

    Assists in coordinating institutional food purchasing and food production.

    Assists the Manager, Food Services in policy development and budget preparation.

    Assists in developing plans for new food service facilities; develops control and standard recipes.

    Prepares and evaluates nutritional values.

    Maintains food cost controls and prepares the annual food expenditure report.

    Confers with the facility captains and advise them on the food service programs, as required.

    Assists with purchasing new food services equipment.

    Plans and manages the catering operations for various events sponsored by the Department.

    Teaches Food and Safety certification classes for food services employees.

    Addresses and manages various disciplinary and employee issues.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY
    Three years' experience at the level of Los Angeles County class of Food Services Manager* or higher.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    *Food Services Manager experience in Los Angeles County is defined as experience in planning menus and directing culinary and other food service workers in the ordering, preparation and distribution of all meals, including special diets, in a jail facility with a large inmate population.     County employees who wish to meet the requirements using out-of-class experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming out-of-class experience should describe their out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. Applicants are also encouraged to submit any supporting documentation such as out-of-class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist staff's review of applicants' qualifications.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of a written response interview assessing Applied Experience and Training, Budget, Managing Others, Addressing Personnel Performance Issues, Conflict Resolution, Motivating Others, Planning and Organizing, Adaptability/Flexibility, and Written Communication, weighted 100%.

    APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff's Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and consideration for initial placement on the eligible register.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION

    The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applicants will be processed on an "as received" basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    The list of successful applicants created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Custody General & Specialized Divisions.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    AS PART OF THE HIRING INTERVIEW PROCESS, CANDIDATES MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE CUSTODY FACILITY SECURITY CLEARANCE, UPON SUCCESSFUL CLEARANCE, A TOUR WILL BE PROVIDED.

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.

    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.

    WORK CONDITIONS
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department operates seven (7) days a week, 24-hours a day. Appointees MUST be willing and able to:
