    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Library, Arts and Culture has immediate openings for ten (10) at-will, unclassified, part time General Librarian I (Non-Career) positions. U nder the direction of a Senior Librarian the incumbent is responsible for serving as a backup librarian, performing professional and technical library work, including references/advisory services, cataloging, and providing additional program assistance, as needed.

    Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, Non-Career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. The incumbent in this position will typically work 18 to 24 hours per week.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Provides reference assistance in person, by telephone, by mail, or electronically;
    • Assists and advises readers in the selection of library materials;
    • Prepares reading lists, bibliographies, and exhibits;
    • Assists with the evaluation and selection of library materials;
    • Prepares regular and special statistical and narrative reports;
    • Plans and conducts special programs and projects;
    • Participates in community outreach programs;
    • Provides instruction in the use of print and electronic resources for the public and City staff;
    • May supervise non-professional library staff;
    • May act as lead in the absence of the Senior Librarian;
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • Graduation from an American Library Association accredited college/university with a Master's Degree in Library Science (proof required*);
    • Willingness to work various shifts, including weekdays, evenings and/or weekends;
    • Willingness to work at the Main Library or any of the Neighborhood Libraries;
    • A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.

    *Required documents, such as transcripts must be uploaded to the online application in PDF format at the time of filing. Proof of education for academic degrees should indicate the type of degree and date of degree conferral.     DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish, Khmer or Tagalog.

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE:
    • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds;
    • Strong computer skills (internet-based platforms, MS Office Suite, databases) and the ability to learn and teach library related technology;
    • Ability to exercise professionalism by combining tact, patience, and a personable demeanor.
