    POSITION

    Represents the people and the City of Inglewood to prosecute misdemeanor complaints and provides various legal services to City Departments.

    The list of tasks below is illustrative only. Incumbents in this class may not be required to perform all listed duties and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

    TASKS

    • Represent the people and the City of Inglewood to prosecute misdemeanor complaints and provide various legal services to City Departments;
    • File or reject complaints, conduct plea bargains, pretrial hearings, and argue motions;
    • Perform legal research, writing, and opinions on criminal and current law;
    • Respond to and submit appeals and investigations of claims and complaints;
    • Draft formal complaints for filing with the courts, making motions for orders related to the case (requesting a summary judgment, for instance), and issue subpoenas for witness testimony;
    • Serve as a mediator for community disputes to ensure compliance;
    • Interview witnesses and Police Department representatives;
    • Research new and alternative methods to resolve issues in the community;
    • Attend meetings, prepare and present lectures on preventative measures and updates on laws and reporting requirements;
    • Prepare and review draft ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, and other legal documents.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

    • Knowledgeable of applicable City, county, state, and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes, and regulations governing municipal law, judicial procedures, rules of evidence and methods of legal research, City and Department policies and procedures;
    • Skilled in understanding and interpreting laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines, preparing court documents and legal opinions, gathering, analyzing, and organizing facts and evidence, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with both internal and external customers;
    • Ability to prepare reports, letters, plans, agreements, and memorandums, respond quickly to changing situations, assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands, work with conflicting and competing deadlines to complete projects; identify, analyze, and implement solutions to complex problems, provide and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain productive working relationships;
    • Proficient in using work-related computer applications, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, the internet, and other electronic devices to perform essential job duties.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited college or university AND a minimum of one year of criminal prosecution experience or successful completion of an internship/externship program and courses related to criminal prosecution. The applicant must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid license from the State Bar of California and a valid California Driver's License.

    THE SELECTION PROCESS: Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process.

    The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
