    Essential Job Functions

    Duties of a Stationary Engineer I

    • Use manual, electronic, and computer-based systems to operate and monitor boilers, HVAC, and related equipment. Perform regular checks on meters, gauges, and control devices to ensure systems are functioning accurately and within regulatory limits. Make adjustments, switch to backup systems, or shut down equipment for maintenance as needed.
    • Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs on a wide range of systems, including high- and low-pressure steam or hot water boilers, motors, turbines, compressors, pumps, fans, valves, water treatment systems, and air-conditioning equipment. Calibrate safety controls and instruments to ensure safe, efficient operation.
    • Test boiler water, condensate, cooling tower water, and other system fluids. Adjust chemical treatments or dosing equipment as needed to maintain accurate water quality.
    • Maintain detailed logs of equipment operations, repairs, maintenance, and fuel usage. Ensure all activities meet regulatory and safety standards.
    • Assist with requesting quotes, generating purchase orders, and coordinating with outside vendors and contractors. Monitor contracted work to confirm it meets required specifications.

    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify

    Two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of high- or low-pressure gas or oil-fired boilers and auxiliary equipment.

    Physical Class

    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    License
    A valid California Class “C” Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    To be considered for this exciting opportunity, at the time of hire , you will need to have:
    • A Limited Steam Engineer's License issued by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Building and Safety.
    • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Technician Certificate in compliance with Federal license requirements as provided in Chapter V, Section 608

    This is a noncompetitive examination. This examination is intended to merely qualify applicants.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information


    Qualified candidates, including those pursuing or planning to pursue the required license and certification, will be placed on a list for twelve (12) months.
