    Position Information

    This recruitment is promotional only. You must presently be a full or part-time regular or probationary County of Sonoma, Community Development Commission, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, or Sonoma County Water Agency employee in order to apply for this position. The Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department has requested a department promotional certification to fill an Automotive Fleet Supervisor position. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary SPI employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised position . This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time or part-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.
    In SPI, the Automotive Fleet Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating activities of automotive staff and serving as the primary customer service contact for County departments and other agencies. Approximately 70% of duties are spent working independently performing supervisory duties and approximately 30% of duties are spent collaborating with other mechanics, technicians, and leads. This position is responsible for supervising seven employees, including one Motor Pool Attendant, one Lead Technician, and five Automotive Technicians.

    Responsibilities of this position include:

    • Supervising automotive staff and interns; coordinating with vendors for out-sourced work, managing warranty repairs, and manufacturer recalls
    • Using a computer to open, review, and close work orders, track technician work assignments, schedule and adjust workload, and generate required reports
    • Serving as the primary customer contact for vehicle repairs and performs the most complex repairs/diagnoses
    • Participating in recruitment actions, assessing individual training needs, and administering performance evaluations of automotive staff
    • Overseeing shop safety and Hazmat programs
    • Coordinating new vehicle setup, installation of specialized equipment, and reviewing vehicle and special equipment specifications for technical requirements
    • Overseeing Motor Pool vehicle check-in, fuel station, and automated carwash maintenance and repairs
    • Coordinating parts delivery; planning for seasonal or periodic parts needs
    • Monitoring quality of work and customer service inquiries and requests
    • Coordinating auction of vehicles
    The ideal candidate for this position will be a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual and possess:

    • Five years of working experience as an automotive technician, including one year as a lead
    • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, staff development, and training
    • The ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate employees
    • Strong mentoring and coaching skills to assist the professional growth of staff
    • Good oral and written communication skills
    • Good customer service skills and the ability to interact with a diverse customer base
    • The ability to foster professional working relationship and team building

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience & Education: Any combination of experience, education, and training which would likely provide the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include coursework or training, in automotive maintenance and repairs and in the principles of personnel management or supervision, and five years of experience as an automotive technician/mechanic, including one year of lead-level experience.

    License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position. The position advertised on this announcement requires possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

    Certifications & Licenses: The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automotive Technician certification and a current Smog Check Technician license(s) as required by the State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair to test and repair emission control systems are required. Once obtained, this license must be maintained as a condition of employment in this classification.

    Class "A" Lamp Adjuster license and Class "C" Brake Adjuster licenses are highly desirable.

    Special Requirement: Possession of small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of: methods, tools, testing instruments, parts, and equipment used in the major repair, replacement, installation, and overhaul of vehicles, including emergency vehicles; safety; diagnosis and preventive maintenance inspection methods and techniques; techniques and methods of repairing, replacing, installing, and overhauling of vehicles, and related component parts, including gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel engines, carburetors, electrical systems, fuel injection systems, transmissions, and differentials; the theory, care, and operation of gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of vehicles.

    Knowledge of: the principles of supervision, staff development, and training.

    Ability to: plan and supervise the work of subordinate employees; plan, schedule, and coordinate workflow for the facility; determine the most effective method of performing a job and choice of internal and external resources; develop and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees, dealer representatives, and staff from other agencies; diagnose mechanical, electrical, and safety problems on vehicles; determine appropriate maintenance and repairs; use automotive diagnostic equipment; interpret manufacturers' specifications; provide assistance and training to subordinate staff; follow and provide specifications to customers, vendors, and subordinate staff; keep complex records; use computer to perform a variety of functions including; to open, review, and close work orders, track work assignments, schedule and adjust workload, and generate required reports.
