    The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires , including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.     The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Equipment Maintenance Helper vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.

    Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

    During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

    Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Equipment Maintenance Helper position.

    DEFINITION :
    Assists in the maintenance and repair of various types of equipment and tools or independently services the simpler types of equipment and tools.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS :
    Positions allocable to this class typically report to an Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, or higher-level supervisor and are characterized by the performance of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of equipment and tools of County facilities. Under close supervision, these positions assist in setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining assigned equipment and tools used in areas such as recreational activities, park maintenance, hospitals and facilities, fueling facilities, and a variety of other areas or activities. Positions in this class utilize hand and trade type tools in the performance of work related duties.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Assists in maintaining, modifying and repairing gas powered and non-gas powered equipment (e.g., generators, smoke ejectors, self-containing breathing apparatus) and tools (e.g., rotary saws, yard/station equipment, jaws of life) by inspecting for safe operation and/or physical damage; replacing and cleaning sensors, belts, filters; lubricating parts with oil; detecting and diagnosing causes of equipment malfunctions or mechanical failures; performing minor repairs using appropriate hand tools and resources (e.g., pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, alcohol, compressed air); and contacting certified technicians when necessary in order to ensure equipment’s proper, safe, and continuous functioning during regular use on the job.
    • Receives, stores, and distributes various supplies (e.g., tools, parts, cleaning) and materials by performing physical labor (e.g., frequent lifting, bending, twisting) and operating mechanical equipment (e.g., electric pallet jacks, forklifts) and using computer/tablet, organizing and sustaining supply area, in order to ensure work functions are uninterrupted and performed in an efficient and effective manner.
    • Delivers special equipment/supplies by driving a vehicle (e.g., County van, light truck), operating forklifts and pallet jacks, transporting to designated locations within the County (e.g., Fire Station, Fire Headquarters) or to vendors in order to transfer equipment/supplies in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Keeps work records of routine and periodic work activities (e.g., inventory, inspection, maintenance, repairs) by completing or updating logs, sheets, and forms (e.g., Supply Inventory Log, Machine Operator Log) electronically in order to document information used by supervisors and managers.
    • Exercises utmost care in the performance of duties by following work safety procedures and practices and utilizing proper safety gear (e.g., protective clothing, ear plugs, safety goggles, etc.) in order to ensure the safety of self and colleagues.
    • Interacts with a variety of individuals (e.g., firefighters, vendors, co-workers, supervisors, other County employees) by communicating with personnel orally and in writing to discuss equipment maintenance (e.g., contacting vendors to service equipment).
    • Prepares various documents (e.g., test sheets) by using a computer/tablet and appropriate software programs (e.g., Honeywell Posichek, Quantifit); and following standard English grammar, structure, punctuation, and usage in order to communicate information to the target audience.


    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
    Six (6) months of experience in equipment maintenance and repair.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
    Some assignments in this class require the use of respirators such as when working in confined spaces or in an environment with hazardous materials.

    You MUST meet the above requirements in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

    LICENSE INFORMATION :
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize and alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS :
    Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT :
    During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
