    The Position

    Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action; OR incumbents serve as the technical scientific expert for a bureau within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

    The Bureau of Sustainable Materials Management (BSMM) currently has a vacant Environmental Scientist 4 (ES4) position in the Development Branch. The supervisor for this branch will be responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and supervising staff and maintaining a strong program. The branch supervisor will be responsible for planning and implementing policies/programs to reduce impacts of materials and products throughout their life cycle, from design and production through distribution, consumption and use and management at end-of-life. They will establish goals and measures; support and perform research; develop and implement incentives, product stewardship, waste reduction, and waste management programs and collaborate with diverse public and private partners. The ES4 will also be required to develop, monitor, and review complex contracts and grants; recommend approval or modification for contracts and grants based on governing laws and regulations.***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and four years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and six years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Additional Position Criteria This recruitment is only open to current classified employees in state service with at least six months of continuous, full-time equivalent service.     Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
