DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Houston Public Works Department is seeking candidates who can:
- Provides review, analysis and interpretation of construction documents to ensure compliance with various codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Consults with architects, engineers, contractors and the general public on preliminary plan reviews, permit requirements, ordinances and procedures related to Sign Administration.
- Interfaces with other technical disciplines and departments on code enforcement and plan review processes.
- Responds to inquires concerning code requirements.
- Approves construction documents for issuing building permits.
- Reviews and writes requirements for plans which do not meet City Building Codes.
- Reviews corrected plans and/or resubmittals.
- Enters data into computer to issue building permits.
- Analyzes construction and material standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The position routinely requires walking, periods of sitting, stooping or bending and/or routine lifting of moderately heavy items, such as plans (up to 40 pounds). There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier III level. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS An Associate degree in Building Inspection or the equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years of skilled, journey level experience in building trades, inspection or plan examining in the area of analysis to be performed to required.
SUBSTITUTION:Four years of skilled, journey level experience in building trades, inspection or plan examining in the area of analysis to be performed may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Building Inspection, Architecture, Engineering or a closely related discipline may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCESPreference may be given to candidates who have experience:
- Using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
- Ability to read blueprints, and engineered drawings, have knowledge of the city of Houston Building Codes and TxDot regulations on signs.
- Able to scale a survey.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such person possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidate for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6**GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None
