    Position Duties

    The Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1)

    full-time Park Maintenance Repair Worker II vacancy in the Capital and Planning Division.

    The Park Maintenance Repair Worker II reports directly to the Senior Maintenance Worker or Parks , Recreation Facilit ies Supervisor, and will be responsible for the construction and rehabilitation of parks playgrounds, equipment, and infrastructure, maintaining pools and fountains, assisting in fabricating, and installing park signage, as well as, assisting in the creation of custom park amenities.

    T ypical duties of the Park Maintenance Repair Worker II position include, but are not limited to:

    • Maintaining, repairing, installing and renovating irrigation systems, playgrounds, pools, fountains and pumps, tables, benches and barbeque units, and performing other duties as assigned, including the knowledge of safety precautions in this type of work.


    • Knowledge of safety, maintenance and basic operations of pools and fountains, and associated pumps, metering devices, chemical control units and other equipment.


    • Incumbents also read blueprints and schematics to identify and solve irrigation and playground issues; draw sketches and plans for assigned projects.


    • Operate and maintain park machinery and equipment such as chain saws, basic power tools and hand tools; may operate arc welding/oxyacetylene equipment.


    • Perform standby after duty hours, respond to emergency park issues on a rotational basis.


    • Repair and refurbish exhibits and attractions


    Incumbents perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled park maintenance repair work of routine difficulty. Some of the typical duties include, but are not limited to: park maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair, installation, and renovation of irrigation systems (potable & recycled), controllers, main line valves, zone valves, backflow prevention device and isolation valves, drinking fountains, irrigation sprinklers, pipes, fittings and flanges, playgrounds, park furniture and hardware, and decorative fountains and swimming pools including associated pumps, metering devices, and chemical control units. Incumbents also read blueprints and schematics to identify and solve irrigation issues; draw sketches and plans for assigned projects; estimate materials required; perform repair and overhaul of park maintenance machinery and equipment such as chain saws and mowers and may operate arc welding/oxyacetylene equipment ; train assigned personnel in performing tasks associated with assignments; assume responsibility for work area, crew, and public safety on assigned maintenance and repair projects; and, on standby, respond to emergency park issues on a rotational basis.

    The candidate may be asked to work weekends and evenings as required .

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education :

    Completion of High School, General Educational Development (GED) or a California Proficiency Certificate.

    Experience:

    Park Maintenance Repair Worker II - Four (4) years of experience (2080 hours = 1 year) in parks, grounds and park maintenance repair or related repair work.

    Licenses or Certificates:

    Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor

    vehicle in the State of California.

    • As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.


    Background Check : Candidates will be required to undergo a background check, including a criminal history record check if offered the position.

    Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination.

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history .

    Desirable competencies for this position include:

    Job Expertise : Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations.

    • Desirable certifications (a minimum of one of the following certifications to be successfully obtained within 1 year of appointment):


    • Certified Backflow Prevention Tester, Certified Playground Safety Inspector, or Certified P oo l Operator


    Communication Skill s : Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills and displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.

    Computer Skills : Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to : MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.

    Customer Service : Demonstrates the ability to anticipate customers' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently using professional demeanor.

    Leadership: Leads by example; demonstrates high ethical standards; remains visible and approachable and interacts with others on a regular basis; promotes a cooperative work environment, allowing others to learn from mistakes; provides motivational supports and direction.

    Problem Solving: Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue; determines the significance of problem; collects information; uses logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions to problems that achieve the desired outcome.

    Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills: Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Selection Process:
