    Description

    Under general supervision, as a prevention/environmental officer wearing a badge, performs routine and difficult work requiring specialized environmental skills to secure compliance with the California Fire Code, California Building Code, applicable sections of the Health and Safety Code, Bakersfield Municipal Code, including other codes, ordinances, and standards. Work involves resolving routine to difficult code enforcement issues within established policy. Incumbents are supervised by the Director of Fire Prevention/Environmental Services. Performs other work as required.

    Representative Duties

    The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Reviews construction, industrial, commercial, and residential site plans, for fire protection system plans building plans for compliance with fire protection codes and standards, municipal code and department policies; Reviews building plans and inspects new and existing structures to ensure conformance to fire protection codes and standards; Provides technical assistance to contractors, vendors, city staff and other agencies in interpreting and complying with fire code and standards; Reviews hazardous materials permits including permits for underground storage tanks, above ground storage tanks and other hazardous materials permits that fall under the review of assigned personnel; Issues Notices of Violation, Stop Work Orders and correction notices.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduation from high school or G.E.D., AND;
    • Two (2) years of college level course work in Fire Technology, Hazardous Materials or Environmental Science, AND;
    • Two (2) years related work experience in California Fire Code (CFC) or California Building Code (CBC) enforcement, hazardous materials or underground storage tank inspection, OR;
    • An equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.
    • Possession of an Underground Storage Tank (UST) Inspector certification will be required as a condition of continued employment.
    • Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License.

    HIGHLY DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
