    AUDITOR CONTROLLER'S OFFICE

    The Auditor-Controller's office exercises general supervision of the financial information and accounts of all departments, districts and agencies under the control of the Board of Supervisors; establishes accounting policies; interacts with other County management in identifying countywide opportunities that affect fiscal and administrative policies; and manages the countywide accounting system.

    PAYROLL TECHNICIAN

    The Payroll Technician classification series perform complex, specialized clerical, technical, and/or paraprofessional accounting and payroll work through the County’s centralized payroll/personnel and timekeeping system; prepare, review, process and reconcile records, documents, and related materials to ensure timely and accurate payment of the County’s payroll, retirement, and benefit obligations; assure the validity, accuracy, and completeness of the information and related employee records; resolve and process corrections and adjustments to associated systems and databases; provide instruction, guidance and training to department staff processing personnel actions and bi-weekly payrolls; prepare payroll, retirement, benefit and related reports in compliance with Federal, State, and County laws, rules and regulations governing employee and retiree pay.

    The current vacancy can be filled at either the I or II level. The eligible list established from this recruitment will also be used to fill part-time and full-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS
    PAYROLL TECHNICIAN I (C)
    Education/Experience: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent AND two (2) years of experience performing bookkeeping, financial, and statistical recordkeeping; or preparing, reviewing, and processing payroll, benefits, and/or personnel documents using an automated payroll accounting system.

    Education/Experience: Completion of 6 semester (9 quarter) units from an accredited college in one or more of the following topics: accounting principles/techniques; payroll production, reporting, accounting, and administration; tax accounting; governmental accounting, computer spreadsheet applications, payroll auditing, and/or computerized accounting/payroll systems* AND one (1) year of experience performing bookkeeping, financial, and statistical recordkeeping; or preparing, reviewing, and processing payroll, benefits, and/or personnel documents using an automated payroll accounting system.

    Education/Experience: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent AND four (4) years of experience preparing, reviewing, and processing payroll, benefits, and/or personnel documents using an automated payroll accounting system at a level equivalent to the Payroll Technician I

    Education/Experience: Completion of 6 semester (9 quarter) units from an accredited college in one or more of the following topics: accounting principles/techniques; payroll production, reporting, accounting, and administration; tax accounting; governmental accounting, computer spreadsheet applications, payroll auditing, and/or computerized accounting/payroll systems* AND two (2) years of experience preparing, reviewing, and processing payroll, benefits, and/or personnel documents using an automated payroll accounting system at a level equivalent to the Payroll Technician I.

    * A professional certification in payroll practices and management such as a Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification from the American Payroll Association may be substituted for college coursework.

    VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS
    To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE APPLICATION SUBMITTAL DEADLINE. Applicants who have a service connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.

    Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score. Disabled veterans rated at not less than 30% disability shall have ten (10) points added to their combined score. Veteran’s preference points will only be added to passing scores in competitive open examinations.
