    Please note: The salary range listed in this job description is a base salary. Applicants eligible for years-of-service adjustments or shift differentials may exceed salary range listed above.

    This position will be located at the Missouri State Parks central office: 1659 E. Elm St., Jefferson City, MO 65101, and will work Mon.-Fri. 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

    • Review cultural resource clearance requests for State Park projects within established time frames to ensure projects to not damage archaeological resources
    • Plan and conduct archaeological surveys (including shovel testing), monitoring, and excavations in a wide variety of weather conditions
    • Prepare survey reports and Section 106 (National Historic Preservation Act) submittals for review by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)
    • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders (e.g., other Missouri State Park programs and facilities, executive staff, SHPO) and external stakeholders (consultants, partner state/federal agencies, tribes, public) to address cultural resource issues and questions
    • Assist with input and maintenance of archaeological GIS data
    • Prepare proposals for consultant contracting; review consultant reports within project timeframes
    • Assist the Cultural Resource Management Program, as needed, with State Parks’ cultural resource trainings, conferences/workshops, program initiatives, policy updates, and other program operations
    • Occasional statewide travel, including overnight travel, required to conduct fieldwork and attend meetings at various Missouri State Parks
    • Attend State Park meetings, trainings, conferences, and workshops, as needed
    • Other duties as assigned


    To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

    • Research : Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
    • History and Archaeology : Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and impact on particular civilization and cultures, and of preservation and archival techniques.
    • Oral and Written Communication : Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
    • Flexibility : Is open to change and new information; adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; effectively deals with uncertainty.
    • Self-Management : Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of archaeological methods and techniques, and experience with writing technical reports and with archaeological artifact identification, classification, and analysis.
    • Experience with ESRI ArcPro for data collection, analysis, and map production
    • Ability to read and understand construction plans
    • Knowledge of, and familiarity working with, federal and state historic preservation laws, in particular Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the Missouri Unmarked Human Burial Statute (RSMo 194.400-194.410)
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Re:discovery Proficio, and Adobe
