    What the Student Worker Program is:
    The Student Worker Program is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience while participants obtain their degree. We will help you to gain experience in building employment skills, establishing a professional network while continuing your education. This is temporary, part-time position, compensated on an hourly as-needed basis for up to 30 hours per week during instructional period.

    Essential Job Functions

    What will I do as a Student Worker, Information Technology?

    • Perform a variety of basic information technology tasks, including installing and configuring desktop software products and hardware such as personal computers, printers, and modems.
    • Participate in the analysis, design, evaluation, testing, and implementation of computer systems.
    • Provide customer service through help desk support and interacts directly with network users.
    • Conduct hardware and software inventories.
    • Assist in performing programming tasks such as program design, program coding, and testing.
    • Assist in making simple modifications to web page contents.
    • Assist in preparing operating documentation.
    • Assist in conducting training sessions for staff on either a one-to-one basis, or in a group setting.
    • Assist users in identifying and resolving network, software, and hardware problems.
    • Assist in ad hoc report development.


    Requirements

    Requirements to Qualify
    Current enrollment in an accredited college or community college with specialization in the Computer Sciences, Information Technology, or a related field.

    License
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Successful candidates are required to submit the following documents during the hiring process:

    In order to receive credit for enrollment in an accredited college or community college, you must include a legible copy of the required document(s) listed below. Submit proof by uploading the document(s) as attachments at the time of filing or by e-mail to studentworkerexams@hr.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days from application submission.

    Required Documents:

    1. Proof of Academic Specialty / Declared Major in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Acceptable documents include:
    • Official or unofficial transcripts, or
    • A verification letter from the school administration confirming your declared major or program of study.
    2. Proof of Current Enrollment. Acceptable documents include:
    • A current Class Schedule confirming registration for the current or upcoming semester/quarter, or
    • A letter from the School Administration (on official letterhead) confirming enrollment status, or
    • A student ID card with photograph indicating current enrollment (must display the current term).
      If hired, you still need to continue to be enrolled and attend school to maintain status in the position.

    Once we have identified that you meet our requirements, an invitation regarding the following assessment processes will be sent:

    Examination Content
    This examination will consist of a multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment worth 100% assessing Navigation, Service Orientation, Issue resolution, Accurate Typing, Learning Potential, Achievement, Attentiveness and Desktop Support (Knowledge of Networking, Peripheral Components, Operating systems, Troubleshooting, and Providing Technical Support).

    Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the list.

    Exam Review
    MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND /OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
    Transfer of Test Components
    If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    Test Preparation
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information
    Applicants who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the County of Los Angeles as they occur.
