    Job Location: Centralia, MO

    Why you’ll love this position:

    The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Grain Inspection and Warehousing Division has a part-time Grain Inspection Worker position in the central Missouri area, near Centralia, MO. Employees in this position are expected to have reliable transportation and communication.

    Employees in this position serve a critical front-line role in the foundation of Missouri’s grain market. Employees inspect carriers (such as railcars) prior to loading of grain, obtain grain samples and perform basic technician functions in order to aid in establishing the value of that grain. The work of this position is primarily in the field (at grain loading sites).

    Employees in this position are anticipated to work 1-2 days a week, however, work in this position is intermittent and can vary widely throughout the year. Supervisors work with employees on their availability.

    Compensation

    • Base rate of $17.55/hr + 1.5x overtime pay
    • +$4.00/hr for hours worked outside of normal business hours
    • Paid twice per month
    • Paid on-the-job training


    Schedule

    An ideal candidate is flexible with intermittent work, as the schedule for this position can be unpredictable. There may be times where business needs warrant several work occasions in a week, and other times where business in this area may not be present for several weeks at a time.

    Travel/Mileage

    Employees in this position will be expected to utilize their own vehicle, but some mileage will be reimbursed. The employee’s commute from their residence to work sites near Centralia, MO is not reimbursable.

    On occasion, this employee would be responsible for transporting grain samples from the local Centralia-area customers to the office in Marshall, MO, or they may have other assigned duties or training in the Marshall, MO office. Mileage will be reimbursed between the main customer work site in Centralia, MO and the office in Marshall, MO, when pre-approved and following state policy.

    • Receive on-the-job training in the FGIS grain sampling and technician procedures
    • Inspect railcars to ensure they are in proper condition for loading and free from leaks, odors and infestation
    • Obtain representative samples of grain, including climbing railcars and manually probing grain
    • Observe and verify the weighing of carriers by grain company employees
    • Complete work records legibly, accurately, and efficiently
    • Maintain vehicles, sampling and lab equipment, and work environments properly
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, grain businesses, others in the grain trade and the general public
    • Perform other related work as assigned


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Possess a valid Missouri Driver's License
    • Possess a high school diploma or GED/equivalent. Work experience may be substituted for deficiency in the required education.
    • At least 18 years old


    Physical Considerations:

    • Regularly work in a grain elevator environment that may include factors such as loud noise, foul air, grain dust, inclement weather, extreme heights and moving machinery
    • Regularly work from heights, including the ability to climb stairs and ladders
    • Climb into and work in enclosed spaces (shipping containers, railcars) for short periods to inspect the carrier for damage
    • Use considerable upper-body force to insert a probe into grain-filled railcars
    • Distinguish subtle differences in color
    • Detect subtle changes in odor
    • Frequently lift a minimum of 15 pounds, and occasionally lift 50 pounds to a height of five feet with reasonable accommodations
    • Sit or stand for extended periods (several hours)


    Special Requirements:

    • Adapt to variable work schedules that include nights, weekends and holidays, and that are subject to change with little notice
    • Have consistent & reliable means of communication (mobile phone)
    • Have consistent & reliable means of transportation, including occasionally in inclement weather
    • Ability to obtain USDA/FGIS licenses to sample and process grain within established timeframes
    • Employees in this position may be ineligible for hire if they, their spouse, their minor children, or any relative immediately residing in their household is employed by or otherwise receives direct or indirect financial consideration from any grain elevator or warehouse, or engage in the merchandising, storage, commercial transportation, or other commercial handling of grain. If applicable, this relationship must be disclosed prior to hire.

    This is a part time non-benefitted position and will not exceed 1000 hours annually.
