Job Description:Purpose:Under close supervision, performs routine skilled tasks related to installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of all types of traffic signal instrumentation and related electrical equipment essential to traffic control.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Installs, programs, repairs, inspects, and maintains traffic signal equipment and associated electronic components by reviewing and interpreting engineering plans, blueprints, profiles, work orders, and schematics.
- Connects power lines and cables to traffic signals.
- Operates and maintains electronic testing equipment.
- Sets-up and operates hydraulic or aerial bucket truck or other City vehicle.
- Checks, cleans, and services equipment.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:None.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of ADA requirements as it relates to traffic signals and applicable Federal, State, and Local codes and ordinances, basic construction practices and procedures related to basic electrical theory applied to traffic signals, circuits, wiring systems, safety procedures, and policies.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Skill in oral and written communication including use of laptop, monitor, and related software, or other device to program and diagnose a variety of networked devices.
- Skill in the use of hand tools, measuring equipment, multi-meter and other electronics testing equipment used to diagnose and prevent potential issues within electronic signal devices
- Ability to accurately log and report work progress, materials, labor hours, etc. with or without the use of computer software.
- Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and repair electronic components.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both City employees and the public.
- Ability to install, splice, remove, and test wiring and electronic components.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints, profiles, work orders, and schematics.
- Ability to use cellphones, two-way radios, and other communications equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of related work experience in a construction, electronics maintenance, or traffic signal-related role.
Licenses and Certifications Required:- Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
- Valid Texas Driver License.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience in repair and maintenance of electrical equipment such as communications, computer and peripheral or control and instrumentation equipment.
- Experience installing and pulling cable underground and aerial.
- Signal experience or IMSA certification; or the ability to obtain IMSA Certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Working experience trouble shooting electronic equipment installation and maintenance of traffic signals or related/similar equipment.
- Experience working in all types of weather/severe weather conditions to install/repair traffic signals and related equipment.
- Experience working in a bucket truck up to 40 feet.
- Experience using computers to troubleshoot traffic signal issues.
Notes to Candidate:Overtime, on call, and call back rotation duties are required as needed. The Traffic Signal Technician will be responsible for constructing, maintaining, and repairing devices including, but not limited to traffic and pedestrian signals, signal cable on span wire or in conduit, install signal poles, arms, and cameras.
After training, the Traffic Signal Technician will participate in rotation of being called during off hours to perform emergency repairs on traffic signals at all times during the night.
Essential Employee:This position is considered an “Essential” role and is essential to the operations of the City based on the preparation, response, and recovery phase of extraordinary situations or emergency conditions. As an employee that has been designated as “Essential” the expectation will be to work at a designated work site during declared extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to serve the community. Essential Employees during emergencies play a role in ensuring the public health, safety, and welfare of our community and ensuring City operations continue.
Pay Range: $22.48 - $25.24 per hour.Hours: Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Drug Testing: To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.
Driving Requirement: This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. This position must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
